This month’s Unforgettable People feature celebrates a woman whose story is as inspiring as the designs she creates. Dawn, tell us about Ahner’s and why you chose this path.
I’m truly honored to be featured and to share a little of my story. I married my high school sweetheart and started my business at just 20 years old after transitioning from a career as an EMT. I’m a proud mom of two amazing boys, and my journey has been filled with hard work, passion, and dedication. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to see my business grow and flourish—something I’m deeply grateful for.
Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to explore a wonderfully varied career, including working with renowned brands like Waterford and Teleflora, serving as an educator at SWIC, and being recognized with awards at St. Louis Art Museum’s Art in Bloom in 2020. One of the most humbling honors was being selected to help decorate the White House for Christmas in 2024. I was also thrilled to be featured on “Great Day STL” in a segment that highlighted my work.
Each of these experiences has shaped who I am today, and I’m so thankful for the incredible support I’ve received throughout the years.
What inspires you in your work?
Designing is truly my passion—it’s something that comes straight from the heart. I feel fortunate to wake up each day and do what I love. The challenge of pushing my creative boundaries inspires me and gives me a deep sense of purpose. It’s that inner drive that motivates me to make every day meaningful, fulfilling, and successful.
What challenges have shaped you as a business owner?
One of the greatest challenges I’ve overcome has been learning how to run a successful business while raising a family. It’s a delicate balance—pursuing my dreams and passions while also making sure my family feels loved and supported every step of the way. An added challenge has been caring for my oldest son, who has a disability and will require lifelong care. While it’s not always easy, I’m incredibly grateful for the strength, love, and perspective this journey has given me. It’s taught me to find beauty in the hard moments and to keep moving forward.
What are your long-term goals for Ahner’s?
My greatest hope is to continue building the Ahner legacy—a heritage that spans five generations and is soon to be six. It’s motivating to know that the love, dedication, and hard work I pour into what I do today will help shape something lasting for the generations to come. Being part of this legacy fills me with pride and purpose, and I’m truly excited to see how it continues to grow and flourish.
Who has influenced you the most?
When I think back on the people who’ve shaped me most, my mother and grandmother immediately come to mind. They’ve been my biggest influences—steadfast in their support and gently guiding me with their wisdom, love, and strength. I’m grateful for the example they set and the foundation they helped me build.
What makes Ahner’s unique?
Floral arranging is such a unique craft and business because it allows me to create custom designs that truly connect me to each customer. As a designer, I find deep meaning in that connection—flowers are such a powerful expression of love, and being part of life’s most meaningful moments, from weddings to funerals, is an honor I don’t take lightly.
Interior design is another passion of mine, offering a different yet equally fulfilling way to connect people with the spaces they visit or live in. Whether through flowers or interiors, creating beauty that resonates on a personal level is what inspires me every day.
What’s one piece of advice you would share with others?
One thing I’ve really come to believe in is timing—things happen when they’re supposed to. It might not always feel that way in the moment, but looking back, it usually makes sense. I also have a little saying I use with the girls in my shop: ‘Done is done.’ It’s just a reminder not to get too caught up in making everything perfect. Focus on the task, give it your best, and trust that your effort is enough. Perfection can slow you down—progress is what really matters.
What does being part of a community mean to you?
Being part of the community as a trustee and treasurer for The Looking Glass Ambulance District, as well as serving as chairman of the planning commission, allows me to build meaningful connections while working toward a common goal. It’s all about serving the community and contributing to its growth and improvement. By bringing together diverse talents, we can support and strengthen our community in ways that truly make a difference.
How do you want people to feel after interacting with you or being at Ahner’s?
I truly hope that when people visit our shop and greenhouse, they leave feeling inspired. We arrange our displays not only to showcase creativity but also with everyday elements that anyone can easily recreate at home. Our designs are inspired by so many things—a color palette, a photograph, or even just a single item—and we aim to bring that inspiration to life!
What’s one thing people might not know about you?
A fun fact that most people don’t know about me is that I’m a beekeeper and a trap shooter!
What’s something you can’t live without?
For me, it’s two things: a Diet Mountain Dew and a good pair of tennis shoes!
What’s one thing you’ve done recently that brought you joy?
I’m learning French!
Any surprising bucket list items?
I’d really love to learn and master European floral design, along with the opportunity to design in the Black Forest in Germany someday.
