What’s your story?
Poettker Construction is a second-generation business with a rich history rooted in family values and a commitment to excellence. Founded in 1980, our company began with a vision to deliver high-quality construction services while fostering a culture of integrity, safety, quality, and teamwork.
From our humble beginnings, we have grown into a premier construction firm, known for our expertise in commercial, distribution, federal, healthcare, education, industrial, retail, and utility construction. Our journey has been marked by significant milestones, including 45 years in business this year.
Our team is composed of dedicated professionals who bring a wealth of experience and a passion for building. We believe in continuous improvement and innovation, which is why we invest in the latest technologies and training to ensure we deliver the best results for our clients.
What motivates you to do what you do?
At Poettker Construction, our motivation is deeply rooted in the values and experiences of our founder, Charles “Chuck” Poettker, a Vietnam War veteran and Bronze Star recipient. Chuck’s military service taught him discipline, resilience, and teamwork—principles that have shaped our company for over 4 decades.
Inspired by Chuck’s sense of duty and commitment to excellence, we are driven by a passion for building and a purpose to serve our clients and communities with integrity. Family is at the heart of everything we do. Chuck’s dedication to his family has instilled in us the importance of creating a supportive and collaborative environment, where every team member feels valued and motivated.
The legacy of Chuck’s service and his commitment to family motivate us daily to create relationships and buildings that exceed expectations and contribute to community growth. At Poettker Construction, we believe in building a better future for the generations to come. This belief fuels our passion and purpose, driving us to innovate, collaborate, and deliver exceptional results every day.
What’s one challenge you’ve overcome, and how has it shaped you or your business?
One significant challenge we faced throughout the year was the need to diversify our markets to weather shifts in the economy. Initially, our focus was primarily on a few key sectors, which left us vulnerable to market fluctuations. For example, if the economy slowed, we realized that relying on a limited number of markets was not sustainable for long-term growth.
To address this, we embarked on multi-year strategic plan to diversify our portfolio. This involved expanding into more regions, including the Southeast, and looking for opportunities in new market sectors. It required us to adapt our skills, invest in new technologies, and build relationships with clients and partners in these emerging markets.
This challenge taught us the importance of flexibility and innovation. By diversifying our markets, we not only mitigated risks but also discovered new opportunities for growth. It has made us a more resilient and dynamic company, capable of thriving in various economic conditions.
Today, our diversified portfolio is a testament to our ability to adapt and grow. This experience has shaped our business strategy and reinforced our commitment to continuous improvement and going where our clients and the work take us.
What do you hope to accomplish through your work or mission?
At Poettker Construction, our mission is to build lasting relationships and create a legacy of excellent quality projects. We aim to:
1. Build Trust and Relationships: By fostering open communication and reliability, we build trust with our clients, partners, and community, ensuring successful projects.

5. Solve Problems and Meet Needs: We address our client’s unique needs with efficient project management, leveraging the latest technologies and industry best practices; and continuously improving our construction techniques and processes.
Driven by a passion for building and our core values, we are proud of our history and excited about the future.
Who has been the biggest influence on your journey?
The biggest influence on our journey at Poettker Construction has undoubtedly been our founder, Charles “Chuck” Poettker. Chuck’s leadership and values have shaped our company from the very beginning. As a Vietnam War veteran and Bronze Star recipient, Chuck brought with him a profound sense of duty, discipline, and resilience, which have become the cornerstone of our business.
One of the most impactful principles Chuck instilled in us is the Golden Rule: “Treat others as you would like to be treated.” This simple yet powerful guideline has influenced every aspect of our operations. It has guided us in building strong, respectful relationships with our clients, partners, and employees. By adhering to this principle, we ensure that integrity, fairness, and empathy are at the heart of what we do.
What makes your business, craft, or mission unique?
At Poettker Construction, our people and self-perform capabilities set us apart. Our dedicated team brings experience, passion, and innovation to every project, ensuring exceptional service and quality. By self-performing critical aspects like concrete, carpentry, and site work, we maintain control over quality, schedule, and cost. Clients connect with us for our integrity, collaboration, reliability, and personalized approach. We prioritize open communication and transparency, building trust and strong relationships. Our unique people-centric culture and self-perform expertise allow us to deliver outstanding construction services and create lasting value.
What’s one piece of advice you would share with others?
Relationships are a primary pillar for a company’s success. In both personal and professional settings, treating others with respect, empathy, and fairness fosters trust and strong relationships. By listening, understanding, and valuing the perspectives of others, you create a positive environment where collaboration and innovation can thrive. This approach not only enhances your interactions but also builds a foundation for long-term success and mutual respect.
How do you hope people feel after interacting with you or your business?
At Poettker, we hope to leave a lasting impression on everyone we meet. We want our employees, clients, partners, and community to feel that their needs are understood and met with the highest level of professionalism and care. By fostering trust and strong relationships, we strive to create a positive impact that extends beyond our projects, contributing to our lasting legacy.
What does being part of the community mean to you?
At Poettker Construction, being part of the community means everything to us. We are honored to be part of a close-knit community in our hometown of Breese, IL. As we grow as a top regional contractor in both the Midwest and Southeast, we extend our core family values to the people we meet.
Our community has shaped us by providing opportunities to learn, grow, and give back. The support and feedback from our community drive us to continuously improve and innovate. By engaging with local organizations and supporting community initiatives, we ensure our work has a positive and lasting impact.
Through our growth and success, we are blessed and proud to support the communities and charity organizations where we live and work. From fundraising initiatives for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern Illinois and Dream on 3 Carolinas to volunteer efforts with multiple Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities (CEO) chapters, Community Link events, and Sleep in Heavenly Peace bed build days, we are committed to making a difference.
What’s one thing you’ve done recently that brought you unexpected joy?
In 2023, we launched our NextGen initiative to give students the opportunity to explore, develop, learn, and experience construction. As a partner in education, we connect with students, teachers, and faculty during construction projects, promoting positive character building in the next generation. We seek to unlock interactive opportunities for students to build their futures while advancing our communities.
Our program includes engaging students during significant project milestones, offering hands-on career experiences through STEAM activities, paid internships, workforce development programs, and scholarships for advanced education. The impact of this program is limitless.
Recently, we guided Aviston Elementary students on tours of their ongoing project, engaged Kaskaskia College athletes to help break ground on their new gymnasium, participated in Parkway River Bend Elementary School’s technology month with an interactive drone presentation, and awarded five continuing education or community impact scholarships.
